Sourdough Rye Bread #Breadbakers

Being part of the bread bakers group gives me opportunities to make breads with new grains, make breads that I had never even heard of and step into unchartered territories. This month, I am hosting the Bread Baker’s theme and I decided on Rye. Mainly because I had never made a bread with rye. I also threw in a challenge – no processed flours or sugars. If there is something I can tell you about my fellow bread bakers, it is that this group is immensely talented, creative and they have come up with so many delicious options for you …

Pepperkoek – The Dutch Spiced Cake #Daring Bakers

For the month of December, Andrea from 4pure took us on a trip to the Netherlands. She challenged us to take our taste buds on a joyride through the land of sugar and spice by baking three different types of Dutch sweet bread. Out of the three sweet breads she suggested, I picked the pepperkoek – the dutch spice cake as I had just made a batch of gingerbread spice.   The Pepperkoek or the ‘pepper cake’ is a popular Netherlands cake. Also known as ontbijtkoek  and kruidkoek.  Peperkoek  was a special and expensive treat in the old days as …

Quinoa and Millet Bread #BreadBakers

For this month’s bread with the Breadbakers, our host, the wonderful Mireille Roc of Chef Mireille’s East West Realm chose Quinoa as the theme ingredient. I was excited to be baking with quinoa because I love quinoa in all forms. I have even made a Quinoa chilli to the horror of some but admiration of many. I also managed to convert a few white rice lovers over to a nice Quinoa Biryani . And I have made dime a dozen pancakes and flatbreads with it. But what I had never done was to actually make a loaf of bread with it. So this was a bread …

Butterflake Rolls

Holidays – a reason to come together, enjoy family and friends and cook and share a lot of food. For me, Holidays always means a reason to bake a lot of home made breads. The pleasure of sharing a home baked bread with friends and neighbors just enhances my Holiday spirit.  I usually make my  Butternut Squash Rolls to take to a Holiday dinner, but for this Thanksgiving I wanted to try out something new. I chose these butterflake rolls because they look so festive. And they are a real treat to eat. The November Bread Bakers event was hosted by …

Peshawari Naan #BreadBakers

A sweet, savory and nutty bread – the Peshawari Naan. The aromas wafting through the kitchen while baking the peshawari naan are simply irresistible and so is the taste when the naan is baked and ready to be enjoyed. This month the theme for Bread Bakers was ” A touch of grape”. Stacy, who authors the gorgeous blog Food Lust People Love, was the host and this is what she said about the theme – “Make any kind of bread with grapes! They can be roasted, dried (as in raisins) candied, jellied, etc. as long as they are used in …

Petit Pain au Lait

I am a few days late in posting the Petit Pain au Lait – the bread of the month for the “We Knead to Bake project”. It’s been happening a lot lately. I do cook and bake a lot. I just don’t get around to posting them or writing about them. Sometimes I don’t even get around to photographing them. That is something that does happen when family is visiting and you are busy enjoying the time together and making memories. And for me memories around food are always the best kind. For this month’s We knead to Bake, …
